Sound Waves: Music in Newham Launch
Sound Waves: Music in Newham Launch

After two years of research — and with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers, researchers and community contributors — we’re excited to announce the launch of Sound Waves: Music in Newham.
From 1 November 2025, the project comes to life through a series of exhibitions, films, a new website, and a publication celebrating 60 years of music-making across the borough. Together, they reveal how Newham’s communities have shaped the sounds of London — from youth clubs and reggae sound systems to pirate radio, raves, choirs and club culture.
The first of three pop-up exhibitions opens at Beckton Library on 1 November, followed by Stratford and Plaistow later in the month. Visitors can explore stories, images, and recordings gathered from across the borough.
The accompanying website will make these materials available online and invite you to add your own memories, photographs and stories — helping us continue to build Newham’s musical archive.
Everyone is welcome to take part, visit, and share their experiences.
